在研究论文中，何时适用连字号（hyphen）？
关于连字号（hyphen）的使用，有几门学派提出各自的想法。您可以选择彻底遵循连字号的使用规则，但这常导致过度使用的连字号，许多经验老练的作者并不倾向这样的做法。
或者，只选择在需要澄清模糊语意时，再使用连字号，但这又会导致使用连字号的数量过少，编辑们并不喜爱这样的方式。关于连字号使用上，我个人偏好的参考资料是「芝加哥格式手册 The Chicago Manual of Style」，不过有部分科技写作者觉得此手册所建议的连字号使用量过多；「美国物理学会格式手册 American Institute of Physics Style Manual 」则提出「连字号没有实际用途时，应避免使用连字号」。
1. 大部分复合形容词在修饰其后接的名词时，以连字号连结：
differential-mode current
well-known fact
high-frequency behavior
low-pass filter
odd-integer terms
steady-state voltage or current
common-mode voltage
◎注意相同复合词用以表示名词的时候，不加连字号：
范例：
open-circuit voltage
short-circuit current
EX: The configuration was an open circuit.
范例：
first-aid kit
EX: You should give first aid.
范例：
worst-case event
EX: Consider the worst case.
范例：
high-voltage supply
low-voltage system
EX: There was high voltage on the wires that were supposed to carry low voltage.
2. 包含数字或「half-」等概念的复合词需加连字号：
half-baked
half-life
half-width
one-half
three-electrode tube
four-terminal capacitor
first-order approximation
two-thirds （大部分的科技写作者会写2/3，而非two-thirds。）
8-bit digitizer
3. 以「-ly」结尾的副词，不会有含有连字号的复合词出现。
highly competent person
fully ionized gas
4. 复合词的形成，是由两个相同功能的字所组合而成的，进而变成有不同意义的单一字词。
one-to-one correspondence
blue-green
gain-bandwidth product
analog-to-digital conversion
state-of-the-art
scholar-poet
5. 所有与「-free」结合的复合词需加上连字号：
divergence-free
6. 通常情况下，前缀词不需要以连字号连结，但以下为例外：
a.所有以「self-、all-、ex-、quasi-」开头的复合词皆需加连字号：
self-extinguishing
all-inclusive
ex-president
b.与同形同音异义字区别：
re-cover, re-solved （意指「再次覆盖、再次解决」时，需加连字号）
un-ionized （意指「未离子化」时，需加连字号）
c.当前缀词的尾字母与相接的词的起首字母相同时：
anti-intellectual
non-negative
semi-independent
d.当字母的重复会造成误解或不美观时：
non-ionizing
non-oscillatory
photo-ionization
re-reading
举例来说，「nonoscillatory」 一眼看去像是「no no scillatory」。
e.当前缀或后缀词与姓名、符号或数字连结时：
non-Newtonian physics
pre-1970 designs
mid-1970s
◎特别注意下列字词是不需要连字号的：
nonlinear
coauthor
metastable
multiconductor
semiconductor
infrared LED
