Job Title: Project Support Officer (National Volunteer)
Duration of placement: Full-time, March – March 2010
Expected start date: 2 March 2009 (flexible)
Location: Kunming City, Yunnan
Background:
VSO is an international development agency that works through volunteers to tackle global poverty and disadvantage. Since 1958 when VSO was established, more than 30,000 VSO volunteers have worked in some of the poorest countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, the Pacific and Eastern Europe. Each year, we have around 2,000 volunteers sharing skills with partner organizations in these regions.
One of the partner organizations of VSO China is Daytop Drug Addiction Treatment and Rehabilitation Center is the first voluntary treatment center in China to make use of a collective lifestyle to change drug addicts' behaviours, emotions and thinking and to prepare them to re-enter society able to stand on their own feet and contribute. The center promotes a sense of responsibility, honesty and trustworthiness, all of which are important concepts in mainstream society. All kinds of organizations have emerged and rapidly became internationalized thanks to Daytop's influence, which clearly demonstrates the center's impact and usefulness. Since HIV/AIDS is very much connected with drug user here in Yunnan, HIV/AIDS prevention and how to care for HIV infected individuals are key areas of work at Daytop.
Summary of the role:
The national volunteer will support the international volunteer by translating training modules and project proposals, both from Chinese into English and English into Chinese. Additional duties to act as an interpreter during the workshops and other meetings
Key requirements:
· Excellent English and Chinese, both written and spoken
· Experience of translation and/or interpretation (English/Chinese), or of working in both languages, preferably with international staff
· Experience and/or interest in development/voluntary organisations, especially in China
· The ability to work closely with members of staff and facilitate communication
· Experience of working independently and managing own workload to meet deadlines
· Knowledge of HIV/AIDS and project concepts, or willingness to learn new terminology
· High level of computer skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and internet
